WAU is free, and stays free.

No investors, no ads, no subscriptions, and nothing held back behind a paywall. It is built by two people who wanted to see where they had been. Donations are what keep the servers on.

Support WAU

A one-time payment through Stripe. No account, no recurring charge, and nothing linked to your map. You can also do it inside the app, under menu → About → Support WAU.

We built WAU because we wanted to see where we'd been. After years of travelling there was still no simple way to look at the shape of it, so we made one.

Every part of it comes out of real trips — the fog that clears along your route, the statistics that tell you how much of the world you have actually crossed, the offline QR codes that work in a forest with no signal because that is where we needed them.

Your tracks, fog, places and photos stay on your phone. There is no account to make and nothing to sync, which also means there is nobody paying us for your data. That is the part donations cover.

Where the money goes

  • The servers behind public places Storing and serving the campsites, beaches and viewpoints other explorers have shared.
  • Moderation A human reviews every place before it is published, and actions every removal request.
  • Map tiles The basemap and satellite imagery are metered, and every first look at a new area costs something.
  • The two developer accounts Apple and Google both charge yearly for the right to keep a free app on the store.

Whether you donate or not — thank you for exploring with WAU. Every kilometre you record and every place you save is what makes it worth building.
